HOW TO ALKALIZE NATURALLY THE BODY, KEEP IN BALANCE YOUR pH AND HEAL YOURSELF.
WHAT IS THE ACID-BASE BALANCE AND WHY IT MATTERS.
Lately, we hear a lot about alkaline diet and the importance of keeping in balance the pH of our body.
The popularity of this argument is such that several articles have appeared in the specialized sections of national newspapers dedicated to it.
Too often, however, we tend to simplify the topic and end making some confusion. In the following paragraphs, we will try to explain clearly what is meant by the term “acid-base balance” and how to alkalize the body when this balance is altered by an excess of acidity.
ACIDS AND BASES: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
The substances aimed at the construction and functionality of the human organism are very numerous: amino acids, sugars, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, etc; moreover, each of them plays a specific role in the body. All these substances can be classified into two main groups: basic substances (also called alkaline ) and acidic substances.
With opposite but complementary characteristics, acids and bases are both fundamental for the state of health of the organism: when these are present in equal quantities a stability is created which is called “acid-base balance”.
WHAT IS pH?
pH means power (or potential) of hydrogen. It is a numeric scale used to specify the acidity of basicity of a solution.The concept of pH was first introduced by a Danish lab in 1909.
Indicators are used to measure pH. They use the fact that their color changes with pH change. Visual comparison of the color of a test solution is made with a standard color chart. This provides a means to measure pH.
Pure water is neutral. When you dissolve an acid in water, the pH will be less than 7. When you dissolve a base, or alkali, in water, the pH will be greater than 7. The pH of neutrality is very close, but not exactly, 7.
The difference between acids and bases is their ability to release or attract hydrogen ions; the unit of measure of the degree of acidity or alkalinity of an organism is defined pH ie the power (p) of free hydrogen ions (H).
The pH measuring scale goes from 0 to 14 and the figure 7 indicates the balance between acid and alkalizing (neutral pH ): in fact, the body works best when the indoor environment has a pH of 7:39, therefore slightly alkaline.
THE IMPORTANCE OF PH BALANCE FOR THE HUMAN BODY.
In order to stay healthy, the human body needs to be in a state of balance thus the ‘excessive presence of acidic or basic substances can cause damage to health. In particular, while the acids in the body free a number of substantial hydrogen ions, the alkalizing are able to neutralize them.
To stay healthy the body should then maintain pH values as closely as possible to the “neutrality”.
The ‘ acid-base balance is, therefore, a key element for our well-being, which can, however, be affected by certain factors, internal or external. Let us see which ones.
THE DAMAGES OF AN EXCESS OF ACIDITY.
Many of the functions needed to produce energy and to keep us alive generate acidity themselves. This acidity, however, in a normal situation, is neutralized by the body.
Consider, for example, the metabolic waste generated by the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins: many of these are acidic and their failure to disposal and the consequent accumulation can, in time, cause a state of “acidosis”.
The consequences of an excess of acidity can, therefore, be tricky for our body. For this reason, it is good to know how to alkalize the body when the acid-base balance is altered.
In addition to food, the factors that can contribute to this imbalance are:
- stress ;
- consumption of alcohol and cigarettes;
- environmental pollution.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF AN IMBALANCE?
Acids and bases are substances with opposite characteristics and if they are combined together their properties are canceled “giving life” to a neutral salt. Usually, the alkalizing substances used by the body to neutralize the acids are a bit all over the body: first in the blood, secondarily in the organs. If this action occurs sporadically, the transferred alkali are replaced without problems by the food intake of amino acids and basic minerals.
The problem arises when we often resort to blood and organs in order to obtain the bases: in this case, the organs are subjected to stress and undergo a demineralization. Because of the wrong life-style and an unbalanced diet, this solicitation is increasingly usual. This dynamic can “weaken” our body and promote the development of various diseases and many problems affecting people.
WHAT ARE THE MOST HARMFUL ACIDS?
Every day we come into contact, in a more or less conscious way, with acid or basic substances. The acids rarely exist in an independent or isolated form but are often linked to the bases. The acids can be divided into two categories:
- weak acids (mainly, carbohydrates and vegetable protein containing citric acid). These are mainly expelled in the form of gas from the lungs;
- strong acids (animal protein). These are rejected by the kidneys through the urine and by the skin through the sweat glands (for this sweat has a sour taste in your mouth when it involuntarily ends there).
It is good to distinguish between strong and weak acids since the former are much more difficult to neutralize and to evacuate them is very fatiguing for liver and kidneys.
HOW TO MEASURE THE pH.
You can calculate the pH of the urine also at home (using special litmus papers available in pharmacies) and possibly submit it for medical attention. To do this simply place under the flow of urine the litmus paper, which will change color after a while.
Combining the map to the chart provided with the kit, where each color corresponds to a value, it will be possible to measure the pH. To perform an accurate measurement, it is good to calculate an average of the values obtained by measuring the pH 3 times a day for 5 times a week. The optimum pH value for the urine is between 6.5 and 7.2.
HOW TO ALKALIZE THE BODY AND TAKE CARE OF THE PREVALENCE OF ACID.
As we have seen the acid-base balance is crucial to the well-being of the entire organism. The body works every day (even during sleep) to quickly and effectively neutralize acidity or alkalinity swings (situations that would lead to death).
In reality, therefore, explain how alkalizing the body, besides quite impossible, it is counterproductive to health, what we can do, instead, is to lighten up the body’s work and help balance the pH without having to do an excessive work.
WHY TAKE ALKALIZING SUPPLEMENTS.
How should we behave then? As always, the nutrition plays a key role: the higher the intake of alkalizing foods (raw vegetables, fresh fruit, almonds, millet, lemon juice, honey …), the lower the risk of imbalances.
However, sometimes, the nutrition alone is not sufficient, because of the hectic pace of modern life, of the habit/need to find meals ready; in these cases, you can resort to alkalizing supplements, which can help the body neutralize the acids in access.
These supplements, rich in alkaline minerals and basic amino acids, also have the ability to relieve “the painful or uncomfortable symptoms resulting from the excess of acid” (C. Vasey, The acid-base balance).
ACID-BASE BALANCE AND GOUT.
Alkalizing the body to limit the risk of gout.
When the body has to neutralize many acids for a long time, it deprives the tissues of their last reserves of alkali. When these reserves are not restored properly, the organic tissue is deprived of basic minerals necessary for life and the metabolism is not working properly any longer.
If there is a situation of hyperacidity it means that a balance between acids and bases in the body missing. A problem such as gout occurs always more often and it is caused by an excess of uric acid. (H. Knophius, acid-base balance)
PROMOTE THE ACID-BASE BALANCE WITH THE ALKALINE DIET.
As we have seen, even a healthy diet can help to “fix” a lot of excess acidity in our bodies. Consciously choosing foods according to their degree of acidity or alkalinity is, therefore, important and somehow unintuitive.
For many, it may be surprising to know that foods from the “sweet taste”, such as chocolate, honey or treated grains in general (oats, barley, spelled and corn), actually have a decent acidifying property.
The scope of an alkalizing diet should not be to eliminate certain foods, rather the search for the right balance.
If for example, we realize we are intaking acid-forming foods predominantly, we should try and include in our diet some alkalizing foods. It would be good to give preference, or try to frequently insert in the diet, alkalizing foods such as, for example, green leafy vegetables, potatoes, zucchini, cauliflower, peas, legumes, and fish such as tuna, trout etc. Other foods with a good alkaline potential are fruits such as lemons, grapes, blueberries, kiwi, bananas, and pineapple.
It would be well to limit acidifying foods or beverages such as milk and dairy products, meat, refined sugar, coffee, chocolate and red wine.
Of course, like all diets, even the alkaline one must not be understood in the sense of punishment or deprivation but it intends to suggest good dietary practices, useful to lighten the work of the body trying to balance the pH of our body.
